![]() This is a very painstakingly put-together album, and listeners will have to have some patience in order to mentally piece it all together. ![]() In fact, given the strongly narrative lyrics (which primarily revolve around the subject of a lost lover), the tracks here could best be described as miniature audio movies. ![]() These shifts happen much like scenes changes in a movie, as there is very little repetition within the songs, and there are sometimes distinct pauses separating one section from the next. The tracks all take their time developing, shifting back and forth from full-on metal sections (marked by distorted dual guitar riffs and growling vocals) to calm, acoustic guitar-based passages with more softly sung vocals. Morningrise is, as far as the metal scale goes, possibly their least heavy album it also contains their longest songs - just five of them, ranging in length from ten to 20 minutes. Their style falls at a meeting point between melodic Swedish death metal and '70s progressive rock, though without any of the technical busyness that description might imply. anyways that was my 87 cents. While they have taken a different approach with each album, Opeth has a very distinct and instantly recognizable sound: somber, mysterious, and very serious. ![]() Who knows I might like it playing from ze stereo. I did pre-order the special edition a while back and plan to give it a lot of spins. And I'm sure someone out there will be like "Yo bro u pirated it the leak why are you bitching" Well. And then there's some good parts which are poorly executed I think. I do love they are doing their own thing. Which is sad because this is my favourite band, with my favourite vocalist, and well they are a massive inspiration. I think they had the potential to make something WAY better than this but kind of half baked it. I mean a lot of people think this album is some of their best work since BWP, and think its very strong and well that's cool, but I definitely do not feel the same. There are other parts that are AMAZING, yet get ruined by some guitar wankery, like after the piano part in Famine. There doesn't really seem to be many decent vocal melodies. Some seem to lack any sense of direction, others have very poor lyrical writing, especially in comparison to their older works. But mostly I just think there is a LOT of weak moments in the songs. Man, I was very disappoint with this album to be quite honest. ![]()
